TurkanaWide Located a remote part of Kenya, the Turkana Basin Institute (TBI) is a collaborative, international, enterprise founded by Richard Leakey and Stony Brook University. Its primary purpose is to give support to researchers doing fieldwork in the Lake Turkana Basin. This region is renowned for the extensive presence of the fossil evidence of early human evolution, and so Turkana is a global center for human prehistory research as well as other natural history research associated with our human origins.

TurkanaSolarBroadening their research objectives to include ecology and alternative energy, they installed a PP10, in early 2012, one of APL’s early 10 kilowatt generators to reduce their consumption of diesel fuel. TBI is examining a variety of renewable and alternative energy strategies, and APL looks forward to helping them further update their energy systems in support of their research and educational goals.
